‘When you can hand surface or even sculpt a wall, you get exactly what you want.’
BRENNAN MUSIC ROOM
An area intended for dining was too small and awkwardly approached around a corner, so I converted it to wine storage, serving and music instead: more useful as well as providing better traffic flow.
BRENNAN FEAST HALL
A more spacious area was selected for dining, with a fireplace to warm it up. I painted every square inch of the walls by hand, and yes, there was a California earthquake while I was atop the ladder.
Drawing to Scale
DRAWING TO SCALE
Once I understood drawing to scale, I could supply accurate designs to my draftsmen and architects, and they supplied full working drawings before construction.
The White Office
I laugh now at the big hair of that era, but I am still pleased with my contemporary take on roses. Rose themes can easily look musty and grandmotherly in decorating. Bas relief with poly dewdrops.
Postcards can make a weak display because of their size, but these were significant. Using an Italian technique, I razored wallpapers into overlapping graphic borders to frame them.
Mahogany and Maple Kitchen
I envision; I draw; wonderful cabinetmaker builds. Furniture feet, crown mouldings, mixed woods, mixed hardware, flush fitted doors.
In a space that feels too bare or sterile, such a hotel room, or a guest room left empty for the next occupant, some extra fabric softens things. This particular quilt was a wedding gift that was 10 years in the finishing: every stitch by hand.
